William Cook Obituary

William L. Cook, age 67, affectionately known as “Cookie” to his friends, a lifelong LaPorte resident known for his quick wit, unmistakable humor, and fiercely loyal heart, passed away leaving behind a legacy of laughter, hard work, and deep devotion to family. Born on February 3, 1959, in LaPorte, Indiana, he was the beloved son of the late Frank H. Cook and Audrey M. (Crawford) Cook.

Cookie attended LaPorte High School and built a life defined by grit, humor, and authenticity. In 1984, he married the love of his life, Georgean G. Harvey, beginning a partnership that spanned more than forty years and was filled with unwavering love and shared memories.

To those who knew him best, Cookie was unmistakably himself—down-to-earth, straightforward, and never one to sugarcoat his opinions. He could be ornery and comical in the same breath, a consummate jokester and proud smart aleck whose humor could fill a room. Yet beneath his teasing nature was a deeply kind, loving, and caring man who cherished his family above all else.

A true jack-of-all-trades, Cookie possessed a remarkable work ethic. He worked for over sixteen years at American Rubber Company until its closure and later dedicated more than thirty years to property maintenance at Deerfield Estates south of LaPorte. Whether fixing engines, repairing a home, or helping a neighbor, Cookie had the skill and determination to get the job done.

He took immense pride in teaching his sons not only how to work on diesel engines and repair their own cars, but also how to hunt, fish, and carry themselves with strength and independence. To them, he was more than a father—he was their hero.

Cookie had a lifelong passion for powerful engines and the thrill of speed. He was an avid fan of NHRA drag racing and loved watching the roar of the cars and the precision of the sport. That same appreciation for engines and mechanics carried into his own life, where he spent countless hours working on vehicles and sharing that knowledge with his sons.

He also found great joy in the open road and loved riding his Harley-Davidson whenever he had the chance, especially his beloved Ultra Classic with its sidecar. He was a proud member of the Fish Lake American Legion Post 400.

In addition to his love for family and friends, Cookie had a special place in his heart for his dogs. Over the years they were constant companions and loyal friends, each holding a special place in his life. He was preceded in death by two beloved dogs, Buddy James Cook and Miracle Mae Cook, and leaves behind his cherished companion, Missy Gwenn Cook, who was rarely far from his side.

He is survived by his devoted wife of over forty years, Georgean G. (Harvey) Cook; his sons, Jesse Cook (Amber) and Roscoe Cook; brothers, David Cook and Robert Cook (Carla); sister, Cati Cook Ault (David); and nine cherished grandchildren, Brody J. Cook, Bristol M. Cook, Kenslee A. Cook, Giovanni M. Cook-Lazzaro, Genevicia A. Cook-Lazzaro, Gabriella A. Cook-Lazzaro, Gemma Cook-Lazzaro, Giuseppe T. Cook-Lazzaro, and Gianna N. Cook-Lazzaro. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will remember him for his humor, honesty, and generous spirit.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 20, at 6:00 PM at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, LaPorte, Indiana. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 3:00 PM until the time of service.

Though Cookie may have loved a good joke and a bit of mischief, the love he gave his family, the lessons he shared, and the laughter he left behind will endure for generations—just as strong and steady as the engines he taught his sons to rebuild.
