Just learned of Bills passing. He and I went through flight school and served together in VF-51& VF 93.. he was Best Man at my wedding as I was at his. Diane was Maid of Honor for my wife Joann and vice versa. I always considered Bill as one of my best friends. We stayed in touch. Several years ago I was recovering from near death illness, Bill would call me in rehab hospital. His calls and prayers helped me recover. Would welcome contact with Diane or family.

I had the great good fortune to fly with Bill several times in the right seat, even in the left seat from time to time in 53ND or the Piper Lance the bank flew. He was consummately skilled and shared some of his skill and experience with me including a perfectly executed "military circling to land" technique where we sped at full speed at pattern altitude to the end of the runway, then executed a hard left turn, descending and extending landing flaps and gear at the same time, rolling out straight and level and exactly in line to land, touching down and rolling to a quick stop. He never lost his military flying skills. Another time, on approach to Chicago O'Hare in 53ND, we were asked to give way to a faster passenger jet behind us and to do a 360 left turn while descending, as we rolled out on final, Bill lifted the nose of the airplane slightly saying, "guns, guns, guns!) as the passenger jet flew above us, a perfect shoot-down! Another time, we were inbound to O'Hare with the Bishop aboard and in the clouds on final approach had a complete electrical failure. Bill held steady and with the Bishop's presence and his divine influence, we landed safely and waited or the "follow me" to come lead us of the runway and to the general aviation area. Many times in hard instrument conditions with the airplane in autopilot mode, Bill would be reading one of his many borrowed library books, perfectly at ease flying in the soup. I admired him. Many flying memories with him. Will not forget him.
