Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sharp Funeral Home - Oliver Springs on Apr. 23, 2026.
On April 20, 2026, beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, William George "Bill" Ebert, went home to be with the Lord at the age of 88. Born in
Wilton, NY, Bill graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1955 and married his one true love, Diane Lee Roods on October 12, 1958. While raising their four daughters in
Wilton, NY, Bill worked as a machinist and tool & die maker with General Electric Company, Ford Motor Company, and General Dynamics.
Bill served as Chairman of the Planning Board for the town of
Wilton, NY and President of Wilton Parks and Recreation Commission as well. He worked many additional jobs over the years to support his growing family and was a talented "fix it guy" for friends and family. His fondest memories were of taking his girls snowmobiling, skating, and sledding during the long winters in New York.
In 1979, he and his family moved to
Oak Ridge, TN where he continued his career, working at several companies in Oak Ridge and Knoxville, retiring early from Magnavox. Bill knew no strangers and he and Diane became part of their new community very quickly.
An avid traveler, Bill enjoyed his retirement visiting the wonders of North America with his wife in their RV. Highlights included driving to Alaska as well as visiting family members from Maine to California and places in between. He was known to thank his grandkids for paying into social security with their summer jobs, so that he could supplement his travel budget.
Besides traveling, he loved woodworking and gardening, as well as swimming, playing golf and bowling. Bill was very proud of his handmade pens and often gave them as gifts. His other proudest moments were of being called "Grumpa" and being a spectator at his grandkid's sporting events, and participating in family fishing & camping trips, and holiday celebrations. He was a true storyteller and jokester.
Bill had a genuine servant's heart and loved using his skills and talents to help others. During his lifetime, he happily volunteered for many organizations such as Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Holiday Bureau, The Knoxville Open, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Paradox Teen Center, Knox Area Rescue Ministries, and UKANDU. He was a dedicated member and served as a Trustee of Faith Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Jessie F. Ebert and father, William H. Ebert, Jr. as well as his beloved bride of 65 years, Diane. He is survived by his two sisters & brother-in-law: Phyllis Martinez and Andra & Brian Flavell, four daughters and son-in-law: Coreen Callahan, Pam Sewell, Vicki & Dave Blank, and Kari Ebert, eight grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. He was loved & cherished and will be greatly missed. His legacy lives on through his descendants.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Lutheran, Holiday Bureau,
Habitat for Humanity, or
Alzheimer's Association. Services will be announced later when the entire family can gather, as was his last wish.
Sharp Funeral Home is proud to be serving the family of William G. Ebert during this time of need.
