Doc was my advisor and friend. I was able to travel with him to one of his favorite places, Zimbabwe, for a photographic safari. Such special memories.

Coach Doc was one of the best mentors I've ever had. He challenged my existence and beliefs and made me smile. I will miss him dearly. I remember our last talk when I told him that he lived his life as a better Christian than a lot of Christians that I know. He grabbed my shoulder with a look of true understanding and said, in his special way, son.... thank you. Rest in peace my good friend. You will not be forgotten.

I was saddened to hear about Doc's passing the other day from my AS classmates. Thoughts and prayers for the Embler family. As a teacher and coach, he brought such passion, inspiration, and humor to the classroom (you had to be prepared for Doc's biology class at Asheville School or risk public humiliation..good natured). He is one of those people that left a lasting impression on me during my formative years...he didn't just teach, he forced you to learn how to think critically... great man!

My condolences to Doc's fine family.
This was a fine man. No doubt that Doc played a pivotal role in my personal and professional life. He was a true professor, organized to a fault, and made future college biology PhDs look sad in comparison. I will miss him.
Any former student will remember his kind ability to address stupidity with kind and positive redirection. To this day I find myself pulling out Why that's absurd!, and, when really upset, a You sorry Dud! under my breath. He dealt with students well as they attempted to grow up.
Thank you Doc, and the rest of the Emblers. The world is a better place for him passing through.
God, I already miss that banjo.
