William Ferguson, III Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hilliard Funeral Home, Fairway Crematory & Memorial Gardens - Van on Jul. 18, 2025.
Services for Bruce Ferguson will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2025 at Hilliard Funeral Home with Shelby Davidson officiating. He will be laid to rest at Garden Valley Cemetery, along with his wife of 34 years, Penny.

William Bruce Ferguson III was born April 23, 1943, in Dallas, Texas. He passed away at the age of 82, after living a full and adventurous life. He had recently moved to Ingram, Texas, where he lived for the past five months, after many years in Odessa. He and his wife were full-time RVer's; they died together in the Kerr County flood on July 4, 2025, while doing what they loved.

Bruce was a man of many talents and passions. He was a former Southwest Gymnastics Champion, a YMCA swim instructor. He enjoyed activities such as cliff diving, white-water canoeing, snow skiing, off-roading in Jeeps, boating, flying his airplane, and playing volleyball. He even created his own game, Combat Croquet. He loved collecting and shooting guns and was always ready to help others-fixing everything from bicycles to RVs and homes.

He worked at the YMCA in Tulsa, OK and Big Spring, TX, then as a computer systems programmer at Tyler Pipe in Tyler, TX and Trace in the Dallas area. He later became a private contractor, working for many companies and government organizations.

Bruce was preceded in death by his father, William Bruce Ferguson, Jr.; his mother, Betty Catherine Allen; his sister, Jo Lynn Welles; and his son, William Bruce Ferguson IV.

He is survived by his children, Raymond Ferguson of Odessa, Jennifer Ferguson Lucas (Lonnie) of Odessa, and Michael Frederick of Neches; stepchildren, Roger Schomber of Colorado, Rachel Lynn of San Antonio, and Ryan Schomber of Seattle; grandchildren, Trenton Ferguson, Lonnie Dale Lucas II, Autumn Ferguson Orenday, Lauren Lucas, Kaylee, Hayden, and Cassie; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Rayden, Micah, and Ronin; and great-granddaughter, Isabella Elise, on the way. He is also remembered by his nieces and nephews, Chris, Greg, and Michael Welles, and Kathryn Flora, and many other extended family members and friends.

Pallbearers will include Raymond Ferguson, Lonnie D. Lucas, David Orenday, Michael Frederick, Trenton Ferguson, James Frederick, Tony Brown, and Todd Sligar.
