William F Gallagher Jr

Dr. William F. Gallagher Jr." Bill" "Doc", a respected physician and longtime resident of the Boston suburbs and Bangor, Maine, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut on Oct 4, 1935, Dr. Gallagher graduated from Dartmouth College '57 and went on to earn his medical degree from Harvard Medical School '59. He worked at several hospitals and served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant and was assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy from 1963-1965, where his love of sailing began. He began his distinguished career at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston before establishing a well-regarded medical practice in Quincy, Massachusetts. He then worked in Saudi Arabia and settled in Bangor, Maine for his remaining career. He retired at 82 from his practice.

Dr. Gallagher was an avid sailor, skier, Celtics fan, and tennis player. He was a scholar of Ernest Hemingway, Waldo Peirce and Henry David Thoreau. He loved spending time with family and many of his friends. In Bangor, he had his social groups, morning coffee at Starbucks, and Wednesday's lunch at Longhorns or Olive Garden.

Dr. Gallagher was the son of William F. Gallagher Sr. and Theresa Kelly Gallagher, formerly of Longmeadow, MA. He is survived by his former wife, Diane Shugrue Gallagher and four children: William Gallagher and his wife Mary Blumenthal of Framingham, Maura Gallagher of Boston, Claire Gallagher of Cambridge, and Katherine Gallagher of Quincy. Dr. Gallagher was also the proud grandfather "Papa" of Jack Gallagher of Worcester, MA and Jane Gallagher of Norfolk, VA, who brought endless joy to his life.

A private family and friends gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Sail, Power & Steam Museum, located at 75 Mechanic Street in Rockland, Maine.
