William Kent Gibson

1948 – 2025

Kent Gibson, Emmy and Grammy award winning Producer and Sound Designer, dies at 77. Gibson received his first Emmy in 1981 for his work as a Sound Designer and Recording Mixer on the PBS miniseries Cosmos. co-written and presented by astronomer Carl Sagan. He landed another nomination for his work on the 1996 PBS miniseries America's Music: The Roots of Country.

He was Sound Designer for the award winning Galileo, Battle for the Heavens on NOVA. He won a Grammy citation for Gimme Some Truth, the making of John Lennon's Imagine Album, a Grammy for Physical starring Olivia Newton John, a Grammy for The Heart of Rock and Roll starring Huey Lewis and the News and a Grammy for Rod Stewart as well as multiple Clio and other Grammy Nominations.

Other credits included work on episodes of NOVA and American Experience for PBS; the telefilm Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire; Charlton Heston Presents the Bible; and The History of Sex.

Gibson worked with numerous musicians including Bing Crosby, John Lennon, Cat Stevens, and Fleetwood Mac.

Later, he scored a News and Documentary Emmy nomination as Executive Producer on the A&E telefilm Cosmic Journey: The Voyager Interstellar Mission and Message as President of Cosmos Studios. He served in that role from 1998-2006. He was a founding partner of Rosebud Films. He was a forensic audio, video, and facial recognition expert and owner of Soundesign and Forensic AV.com.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Gibson earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1970 and his master's from Stanford University Film School in 1974.

Kent died in hospice care in October 2025 in Seattle after a struggle with dementia. He is survived by his loving family and many friends.
