William P. Gumpper

William P. Gumpper, age 96, died peacefully in his home on November 5, 2013. He had been married to his beloved wife Marion (Rush) for more than 69 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Mary Lou Dogoloff and her husband Lee, of Dagsboro, Delaware; his son William (Buddy) and his wife Mary, of Fairfield; his son Kevin and his wife Marianne, of Fairfield; and his daughter Denise, of Warren, Vermont; by his grandchildren: Kathy Dogoloff, Kaitlyn Winterbottom, Alison Flume, James Gumpper, Kelly Gumpper, Julia Gumpper, Margaret McLaughlin, and Clare McLaughlin; and by his great granddaughter Lucy Winterbottom. He is also survived by his five nieces and their children. He was the son of the late Phillip and Beatrice (Kelly) Gumpper of Waterbury. A graduate of St Bonaventure College and the University of Connecticut School of Law, he was a member of the Bar for more than 60 years. He practiced law in Bridgeport for more than 45 years, serving a term as President of the Greater Bridgeport Bar Association. Highly regarded in the field of real estate law, he helped draft the Standards of Title for the Connecticut Bar Association, and was a former director of Connecticut Attorneys Title Insurance Company. He served the Town of Fairfield as a member of the RTM, as a member and Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals, and as the first chairman of the reconstituted Parking Authority. In recognition of his many years of service, he was given the key to the Town by First Selectman Jackie Durrell in 1992. His other community activities included the Boy Scouts, the Wakeman Boys Club, the Knights of Columbus, the AARP, and serving as a lector as St Anthony's Church. A member of the Patterson Club for more than 30 years, he was an enthusiastic golfer and bowler. He was also an accomplished woodworker. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. A private burial service will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 9:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 149 South Pine Creek Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
