William Patton Harris

WILLIAM PATTON HARRIS, age 89, of Council, Virginia passed away Wednesday (January 21, 2026) at his home. Born November 27, 1936 in the Grissom Creek section of Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Albert and Mary Maggie Sullivan Harris. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, he was a graduate of Council High School and was a United States Army veteran. He was a devoted and long-time member at Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. He had formerly been employed as a coal mine owner and operator, contractor, and had served on the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors for forty years. He enjoyed gardening and watching Nascar. He always wanted to make sure that Buchanan County and its resident's needs were taken care of, with one example being the William P. Harris Park in Council, which he had worked many years on.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Harris; one daughter, Regina Harris; three brothers, David Harris, James Harris, and Paul Harris; and two sisters, America Sheppard and Ada Mae Rose.
Survivors include his daughter, Ann Perolio and husband, Dan; grandchildren, Jennifer Perolio and Andrew Perolio; brother, Ezra Harris and wife, Rose Ellen; sister, Mary Hallenbeck; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 AM Friday in the Harris Cemetery on Venia Church Road, Venia, Virginia with Rev. Dennis McGlothlin officiating. Those who attended assembled at the cemetery.
