William E. Helvey, known as “Bill” to family and friends, passed away January 25, 2023.
He was eighty-one years old. He was born in 1942, the youngest of three children, to the late Emory and Pauline Helvey. He was raised in Sundial, West Virginia and graduated from Marsh Fork High School.
After high school, Bill moved to the Washington D.C. area to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is where he met Barbara, his wife of 60 years. While working for the FBI, he attended night school and earned an accounting degree from Strayer College. After working as an accountant for a number years, he became a self-employed business owner of Tops Liquors in Oxon Hill, Md. He co-owned and operated Tops Liquors for over 30 years until his retirement. It was his life’s work and he was beloved by his customers, employees, and the community at large.
Bill loved boating and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay for rockfish, bluefish, or anything he could catch. He also enjoyed watching sports including football, college basketball, and especially NASCAR. He further enjoyed attending concerts and sporting events of his beloved grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his wife Barbara, his son Jeff, his daughter-in-law Stacey, his grandchildren Clare and William, his sister Kathryn, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at Lee Funeral Home in Clinton, Md. The viewing will be from 1-3 pm, and the service will begin at 3 pm. A grave side service will be held Thursday, February 2, 2023 at St. Mathew’s Cemetery in New Market, Virginia at 1:30 pm.
