William "Bill" Joseph Isner, age 84, of Kirtland, Ohio, peacefully passed away on November 1, 2025, at the David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland, Ohio.
Born on October 2, 1941, in Buck Run, West Virginia, to John and Ruby (née Harris) Isner, Bill lived a life rooted in hard work, friendship, and a deep appreciation for nature. He dedicated 41 years to the Holden Arboretum as a horticulturalist, retiring in 2008. Bill took great pride in his work and was an avid gardener who found joy and peace among the flowers he tended. His love for horticulture was evident in the many unique species of irises he created-several of which remain on display at the Arboretum as a lasting tribute to his talent and passion.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Bill honorably served his country during the Vietnam era. His quiet strength, dedication, and kind heart touched the lives of all who knew him. He was especially grateful for the unwavering love and support of his family and friends throughout his illness.
Bill is survived by his sister, Patricia Steele of West Virginia; nieces, Laura Isner and Natasha (Eric) Oakley of S.C; great-nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Steve May, whose friendship meant the world to him.
He is preceded by his parents and brothers, Paul Isner and Ray Glen Isner.
A Gathering for family and friends will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South Street, Chardon, Ohio 44024. The Funeral Service begins at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens, 11521 Chillicothe Road, Chesterland, Ohio 44026.
The family suggests donations be made in Bill's memory to Rescue Village, 15463 Chillicothe Road, Novelty, OH 44072.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
