In memory of
Jeffrey Smith

I was saddened today to read of Professor Koellner's passing in the Montclair State magazine. Bill (as he asked I call him after graduation) made a clear, positive impact on my attaining my career goal of becoming an actuary, which I will always remember. In particular, early in freshman year in 1973, Bill got to know me - as he did with all his students. When he heard that I planned to become an actuary, he put me in contact with an actuary he knew. As I spoke by phone with that actuary, one of the topics we covered was reviewing which math and non-math courses I would and would not need to take during my years at Montclair in order to become an actuary. Then, 3-1/2 years later, during a job interview, the interviewer was reviewing my resume & transcript and suddenly exclaimed "You took the perfect set of courses!". I smiled to myself, knowing that was the result of Bill's steering me to an excellent resource. Bill was also a wonderful instructor in Calculus whose classes I enjoyed and learned from. I will always fondly remember Professor Koellner and his many contributions to my success as an actuary.

My sincerest condolences to the Koellner family. I first met Bill and Dolores over 40 years ago as a student at Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where I was friends and classmates with Kevin. We had fun with them both on Parents' Weekends, and I remember Bill as a brilliant man and a true gentleman. May your faith in the risen Lord sustain you in this time of sorrow. - Jake, Connecticut
