William Frederick Koenig

William "Bill" Frederick Koenig, 92, of Cary, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on March 23, 2026.

Born January 15, 1934, in Chicago, he was a lifelong Cary resident and a 1952 graduate of Crystal Lake Central High School. Bill proudly served nine years in the Army National Guard and dedicated over 36 years to Nicor Gas Company as a pipeline inspector before retiring early.

Bill married his high school sweetheart, Mary (Schoening), and they shared just shy of 72 years of marriage marked by deep devotion and adoration. A natural jokester, he brought light and laughter to those around him with his playful humor and easygoing nature.

Bill was a devoted father who took great pride in his family and deeply cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He had a deep love for the outdoors and felt most at peace in nature, especially in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin. Bill enjoyed skiing, trap shooting, gardening, and especially musky fishing, where his happiest moments were spent on the water with a rod in hand. He also found joy in feeding birds and deer and caring for the wildlife around him.

Rarely sitting still, Bill enjoyed time in his woodshop crafting loons and various other birds, making fishing lures, tending the yard, and tinkering. He was outgoing, enjoyed long walks, and loved spending time talking with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; children Scott (Lori) Koenig and Kris (Stephen) Newcomb; daughter-in-law Maureen Koenig; grandchildren Stefanie (Sean) Allen, Mark (Kelly) Franklin, Lindsay Franklin, Alissa (Mike) Wales, Caitlin (Sean) Aubrey, Kevin Koenig, Brittney (Mark) Maxwell, and Brooke (Alexe) Zechman; great-grandchildren Uriah, Indie, Owen, Logan, Maverick, Jameson, Liam, Quinn, and Oaklyn; and siblings Judy (Keith) Adkins and Richard Koenig.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Mark and Fred.
