William Michael Lyons, fondly known to all as Mike, died on August 16, 2024, in Huntington Hospital, surrounded by the love of his devoted family. He was born on January 18, 1940, in Brooklyn New York, to Dorothy and Bill Lyons, the eldest of three sons and a cherished uncle to many.
Mike's journey took him to serve in the Navy from 1958 to 1962, and later in the Naval Reserves until 1964. During this vibrant period of his life, he attended a Valentine's Dance in 1962, an occasion that would forever change his destiny. There, he met Florianna, lovingly called Flo, the woman who would become his beloved wife for an incredible 58 years. Together, they created a beautiful life filled with laughter, adventures, and heartfelt love.
In his professional career, he worked diligently as a gate agent at TWA and later, as a tax examiner for the IRS. His natural proficiency with numbers was a gift he lovingly shared with his children, ensuring they were well-equipped to navigate their financial paths and do their own taxes, a legacy that has been passed down to his grandchildren.
Mike was not just a loving husband, he was also a devoted father to his daughters, Debbie and Catherine. His spirit shone brightly in their lives and the lives of his grandchildren; Corey, Andrew, Leanna, and Anthony. He took immense joy in the laughter and innocence of his great-grandson, Grayson. Family gatherings were marked by playful teasing, spirited games of poker, and cheerful moments shared over Minion Monopoly. During football season, his playful banter often led to spirited bets against his son-in-law, Carl, showcasing his vibrant personality and love for competition each memory a testament to his competitive spirit.
He was an avid reader, much like his mother, and a talented cook known for his irresistible chocolate chip cookies (his father's recipe), and the best crumb cake ever made. His passion for cooking also extended to his beloved vegetable garden, where he nurtured not just plants, but the happiness of those who gathered around his table. Music played a special role in his heart; his favorite playlist often featured Jive Bunny, but it was "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies that truly resonated with him, a little melody reserved for his one and only, Flo, whom he affectionately called his "Candy girl."
His adventurous spirit led him to travel the world with his "Candy Girl", basking in the beauty of new horizons while sharing laughter and love. His charismatic presence could light up a room, drawing friends and family closer with his jokes and practical pranks. His playful nature was matched by a competitive edge when it came to family card games of poker and "Screw Your Neighbor"—he enjoyed a good challenge but preferred to come out on top.
Mike joins his late brother, Peter, and his parents, Dorothy and Bill in heaven. He is lovingly remembered by his brother Roger, who has been by his side, as a confident, and friend to the end. Mike, Peter, and Roger have treasured memories of a lifetime well-lived that will forever resonate. Mike is survived by Carol (sister-in-law), David (nephew), Harriet (niece-in-law), Teresa (niece), and Paul (nephew-in-law).
As we pay tribute to his remarkable life, we remember him not just for his accomplishments or adventures, but for the warmth and love he spread to all who knew him. His legacy of laughter, kindness, boundless love, and Faith in God, will live on through his beloved family, who miss him dearly and will carry his spirit in their hearts forever.
