Dear Mary and Molly:
I'm very late in adding this, but Bill and I sat next to each other in Washington during our time at Northwestern's Medill School. He was such a great guy; funny, committed to accountability journalism, and he and I even shared an interest in boxing. So we never had a shortage of stories.
Our career paths took us far apart.
I've been a reporter in Florida the past 35 years. But my oldest daughter went on to Providence College and whenever I visited, I'd always look for the W. Zachary byline in the Journal. I always thought I'd reach out and reconnect one day, but regret I never did.
But do know that fond memories of your husband and Dad endure, even among those of us whose time with him was fleeting and long ago.

I recently learned of Bill's passing and was deeply saddened. I had not talked with Bill since 2000 when I retired from the police department. Bill was a natural journalist and one outstanding human being. My prayers are with his family and I treasured our friendship.

To Bill's family, so sorry for your loss. I just learned of Bill's passing. Bill was a great friend in high school. Someone I really looked up to. We spent many hours at the "Rec" in Norwich running full court games.
Rest in peace Mal,
Rils

Prayers and thoughts go out to Bill and his family. He was a special guy in our profession.
Bill was always willing to help anybody in journalism.
The New England First Amendment Coalition selected him as a Fellow for its annual Institute. Bill was later invited to be a speaker on a panel I moderated. He was a big hit.
He will be missed.
