William Mann Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jefferson Funeral Chapel - Alexandria on Mar. 19, 2025.
Lowry Mann, (William Lowry Mann III), son of William Lowry Mann, Jr. and Janet Dalton Mann, died peacefully on March 10, 2025 at Sunrise, Mount Vernon, VA, 4 days shy of his 88th birthday on March13. He led a fulfilling life with family and friends who loved him deeply. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Barbara Center Mann; their two children, Glen Hadley Mann and Deborah Howe Mann Sarro, 4 wonderful grandchildren, his sister, Elsa Mann McKenna of Antigo, Wl, and brother Peter Mann of Nisswa, MN.
Lowry was born in Newton, NJ but lived most of his pre-college life in Plainfield, NJ. He earned a BS from Cornell University in 1958 and an MBA at Cornell's Johnson School in 1959. He completed his studies at Cornell in 1964 with a PhD in Agricultural Economics. Lowry continued his interest in Agricultural Economics throughout his life, holding positions at Ford Tractor in Michigan, consulting jobs in Boston and the Department of Agriculture in Washington. DC.
Lowry stayed in contact with his Cornell Phi Kappa Psi fraternity brothers throughout his life. He was a member of the Mount Vernon, VA, Mansion House Swim and Tennis Club, the Mansion House Yacht Club, the Mount Vernon Country Club and the Cornell Club of Washington, DC. He was also an active spouse over the years in the Mount Vernon American Association of University Women (AAUW), enjoying for many years the Gourmet Group, the Dining Out group and monthly Game Nights. As a longtime member of Mount Vernon at Home, he attended many programs and never missed a meeting of the very interesting Timely Topics current events monthly program.
The family graveside service will be held on Monday, April 7 at 2 pm at Grace Episcopal Church in Keswick, VA. Burial will be in the Mann family plot where 5 generations of Manns, and many other families who married Manns, have been buried. The first William Mann, buried in Keswick, was a "second son" who emigrated from Liverpool, England where he and his partner, Mr. Lowry, ran a profitable "feed store" for farmers. William Mann married Mr. Lowry's daughter, thus the family name: Lowry. William Mann bought a large parcel of farm land on what is now Peter's Mountain in the Keswick area and named it Mannsfield, the name it holds today.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt Vernon at Home.
