Newton, NH: William G. "Bill" Nelson, 80, a resident of Newton since 2022, died Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Portsmouth (NH) Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Oil City, PA, he was the son of the late John R. and Anna Marie (Pearson) Nelson. He attended local schools and was a member of the Oil City Senior High School Class of 1963. Bill served honorably in the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer Third Class from 1966 until 1970 and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Navy Achievement Medal and The Navy Unit Commendation.
Bill went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, PA. He had a long career as a sales representative for several medical equipment companies in the Northeast.
A resident of Sturbridge, MA for forty-three years before moving to Newton, Bill was a longtime active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Southbridge, where he served on the Vestry and was active in volunteering for the church. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed playing golf, traveling throughout the US and to Europe and the Caribbean, and spending family time at his camp on Laurel Lake in Fitzwilliam, NH. He also loved working in his yard and clearing and maintaining paths through the abutting woods.
Bill will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of fifty-six years, Margaret A. "Peg" (Sayers) Nelson, three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert G. and Jill R. Nelson of Colleyville, TX, Thomas M. and Jill M. Nelson of Dover, NH, and David W. and Kristen A. Nelson of Wakefield, MA, a brother, John R. Nelson of Middlefield, CT, eight grandchildren, Katie R, Cooper T., William R., Jackson A., Henry M., Cole S., Garrett W. and Annie R. Nelson.
Family and friendships meant everything to Bill, and he was incredibly proud of his partnership with Peg and of all his children, daughters-in-law and his nieces Jennifer, Joanna and Linda and nephew Scott as well as those he built bonds with throughout his lifetime.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bill's funeral service to be held on November 29, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 446 Hamilton Street, Southbridge. The rendering of Military Honors by the U.S. Navy will follow the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home of Plaistow.
