William D. Pitman, Jr., known affectionately as Bill, passed away peacefully at his home in Osage City, KS, on April 23, 2025, following complications from a stroke. Born on March 18, 1948, in Holton, KS, Bill's life was a tapestry of laughter, love, and dedication to his family and friends.
Bill spent his early years in the Silver Lake area, where he completed his education, earning a GED that would serve as the foundation for his lifelong career journey. He began his work life at Allis Chalmers, a place that would prove fateful as it was where he met the love of his life, Joyce A. Chenoweth. Together, they built a life rich in joy and shared moments.
Throughout his career, Bill's hardworking and amiable nature led him to various positions. After Allis Chalmers, he worked at Kobico, Southwest Publishing, and IBP. His dedication and reliability were evident to all who worked alongside him. Bill eventually retired from Goodyear Tire, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and camaraderie.
Bill was a man of many interests, with a particular passion for fishing, camping, movies and rock and roll music. His love for these pastimes was only eclipsed by the time he spent with his family. Bill was known for his sense of humor, always quick with a joke and ready to share a hearty laugh with those around him. His playful spirit often manifested in the ornery tricks he played on Joyce, which became a beloved part of their family's lore.
The words that best describe Bill are funny, loving, and gentle. His presence brought warmth and light to any room, and his gentle spirit was a comfort to those he loved. Bill's sense of humor and loving nature will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He leaves behind a devoted family, including his wife, Joyce Pitman, and his sons, Brian Pitman Foster (James), Marcus Todd Pitman (Ryan Ostrander), and daughter Kari Pitman. Bill was a father figure to his grandsons, Noah and Nick Pitman, whom he and Joyce raised in the last 18 years of his life. His siblings, Harry Carr, Jr., and Sandra L. Wilson, will hold his memory dear, as will his extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, William D. Pitman, Sr., and Viola DuPuis, his son, Jason C. Pitman (Shelly Meek Pitman), and his sisters, Judith E. Pitman and Virginia L. Pitman.
Bill's life was a testament to the enduring power of love and laughter. As we bid farewell to a man whose life was as rich as the relationships he nurtured, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue to live on through the stories told, the fish caught, and the rock and roll music that will play on in his honor.
Bill's journey through life reminds us all to cherish the moments we have with our loved ones, to embrace the joy of simple pleasures, and to always keep a sense of humor close at hand. As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life well-lived, a heart well-loved, and a spirit that will forever remain a part of us.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held on May 4, from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Osage City Senior Center located at 604 Market St. in Osage City, KS.
