Like everyone of my generation, I remember Bill Plummer as Johnny Bench's backup catcher. However, a personal memory: Bill was in my English 1A class at Shasta College in 1979. He was a celebrity in our midst! He exuded humility and seemed not to notice that we all were in awe of this pro ball player. Thank you, Billy Plummer, for standing as a wonderful memory for so many of us.

Bill,
I was one of the batboys for the 1968 Cubs. Your locker was right next to ours and also alongside Rich Nye and Joe Niekro. You were #8. We had a great time on the road because you, Rich and Joe and the batboys were only a couple of years apart. When I brought my uncle down to the clubhouse you were heading out to the field and you shook his hand and he told that story a thousand times! He might as well have shaken hands with Joe Torre!! Thanks for all the laughs we had together and giving me something to do ---- following your many career stops along the way! You were NOBODY'S BACKUP as a great guy! One thing people don't know is your off season job you had loading and unloading boxcars. You told me that would keep you in shape for spring training!

Thank you Sally for letting us know of Bill´s passing. This wonderful man will be greatly missed. He touched so many lives in so many positive ways with his kindness, his incredible talent and his love of baseball. Being backup catcher to Johnny Bench is no small feat. Our hearts go out to you and your family. Lyle and Sheila Chambers
