William Poole Obituary
William D. (Buddy) Poole, 95, passed away surrounded by his family at Heritage Greens on Friday, December 30, 2022.
An 11 a.m. memorial service will be held at Starmount Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 7, 2023, followed by a reception in the church parlor.
Buddy was born in Greensboro, NC to the late Baxter and Margaret Clanton Poole. He graduated from Greensboro High School (Grimsley) and attended NC State. He served in the US Army.
Buddy was married in 1950 to Katherine Routh and shared a wonderful life for 72 years. He was vice-president of L. W. Routh Construction Company and later formed his own company, W. D. Poole Construction Company, building power and telephone lines. He later sold that company and worked as a commercial realtor until his retirement in 1992.
Buddy was an active member of Starmount Presbyterian Church for 65 years, where he served as deacon and elder. He was honored at a Senior Resources luncheon for carrying Meals on Wheels for 25 years. He was a volunteer for Shepherd's Center for over 20 years, primarily in the Shepherd's Wheels program. For several years he was active on the organizing committee for the Urban Ministry Food Drive.
He loved playing golf with his friends and was a former member of Sedgefield and Starmount Country Clubs. He enjoyed skiing in his younger days and at one time was president of Nat Greene Ski Club. Buddy was an avid traveler and visited many countries on 6 continents.
He was so proud of his family: David Poole (Becky), Spartanburg, SC, Kathy Epting, Florence, SC, and Patti Baker (Terry), Wilmington, NC; grandchildren: Amanda Smith (Matt), Spartanburg, SC, Amy Poole (Mark), Charlotte, NC, Holly Hardee, (Scott), Florence, SC, Megan Galloway (Shawn) Lamar, SC, and Will Baker (Liz) Raleigh, NC; and 7 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be sent to Starmount Presbyterian Church Mission Committee, 3501 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27403.
