William Douglas "Bill" Sanders, 74, of Columbus, Indiana, passed away on June 30, 2025, in his hometown.
Born on March 2, 1951, in Columbus, Indiana, Bill spent his life rooted in the community he loved. Over the years, he dedicated himself to public service and hard work. He served as the Elizabethtown Town Marshall for 19 years and also held the position of Elizabethtown Fire Chief. His commitment to his community extended to his work with the City of Columbus Parks and Rec Department. Bill took to the open road as a semi-truck driver and retired after several years with Kroot.
Bill was known not only for his dedication to his work but also for his warm personality and generous spirit. He was funny and kind; always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. Whether through his official roles or everyday interactions, he left a lasting impression on those around him.
In retirement, Bill found joy in simple pleasures. He was often seen sitting in his front yard swing, waving at neighbors and passersby. It was a familiar and comforting presence in the neighborhood. His constant companion was his beloved little dog, Mya. Together they made daily rounds through the neighborhood on his golf cart, sharing smiles along the way.
A fan of NASCAR racing, Bill enjoyed watching races whenever he could. He also had a passion for motorcycles and rode his Harley until health no longer allowed it.
Bill will be deeply missed by family and friends, especially by his daughter Janel (Ryan) Sanders, son Dereck Sanders and siblings Carolyn (George) Brown, Barb Belluchi, Sherry Sanders, Carl (Cheryl) Sanders, and Michael Sanders.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Theodore Sanders and Flossie Mae Sanders; brothers Gordy Sanders and Donald Sanders; and sister Lois (Leon) Lewis.
A man who lived with heart and humor, Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those whose lives he touched.
A Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, 3855 25th St., Columbus, IN 47203 with Pastor Robert Vester officiating. Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana or Bartholomew County Humane Society.

I only just met Bill while walking on the People Trail near his home. I will miss seeing him settle on his porch swing.

We would wave at him every day and stop and talk to him occasionally. He was a good man and a staple in our neighborhood. We love you swingman! Rest in peace.

He will truly be missed. I along with more people than you can count would wave or sit and swing with Bill and Mya. Thank you Bill for allowing me to be your friend.
