Bill Saumer of Pine City passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at Essentia Health Duluth-Miller Dwan Hospital at the age of 67.
William Joseph Saumer was born October 25, 1958 to William Alexander and Albina Emily (Franta) Saumer in Rush City. William "Bill" was the youngest of 6 children and grew up on the Saumer family farm in Pine City. In 1977, he graduated from Pine City High School. After graduation he earned his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Minnesota, later completed a master’s degree in Agricultural Education. He held many jobs over the years, including agricultural farming, beef farming, working for the University of Minnesota Extension Service, and teaching.
He had a passion for the outdoors; enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping in all seasons and conditions. He took many trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, his most favorite spot. Another place he enjoyed spending time was the Kawishiwi Lake Rustic Campground, a great place for bird watching and grouse hunting. Bill was a lifelong Vikings fan and always enjoyed watching a good football game. Listened to what he called “good” music and was an avid card player, often found in possession of a deck of cards. He especially loved special times with family and friends at the Saumer farm.
Bill was blessed with five children and seven grandchildren. He was proud of his children and took immense pride in his grandchildren. He would share photos and stories of all of his family with anyone he could. He visited whenever he could and always brought extra food and cheese from Burnett Dairy.
Bill is survived by his children: Katie (Jared) Kral, children Wesley, Emma, Autumn, and Aurora, Alex (Laura) Saumer, children Liliana and Aurelia, Zach (Corinne) Saumer, Hans Saumer (Jena Sykora), Emily (Sam) Lutz, son Jonah; many cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and his beloved dog Cooper.
He was preceded in death by his parents William and Albina Saumer; sisters Lucille Johnson, Delphine (Gordon) Johnson, Mary Alice (Ernie) Stoffel; brothers Andrew (Ella) Saumer, Robert (Joanne) Saumer.
Father Thomas Galarneault will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial for Bill: 11 AM Monday (12/22/2025) with a time of reviewal one hour prior at Immaculate Conception Church. Visitation and reviewal: 2-5 PM Sunday afternoon, prayer service at 4:30 PM at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City. Bill's interment will take place at Calvary Catholic Cemetery all in Pine City.
