William Richard "Bear" Smith, born July 15, 1934, in Asheville, North Carolina, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 17, 2025. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and unwavering devotion to his family. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Bear will be remembered for his integrity, generosity, steadfast spirit, and the wonderful stories he loved to share.
Bear grew up in Asheville and attended Christ School, where he formed friendships and values that guided him throughout his life. He later graduated from North Carolina State University, an accomplishment he carried with pride.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia Elaine "Lainey" Smith; and his children, Stephanie Lynn Smith, Stacy Ann Smith Poznick, Cameron Scott Smith, Clarice Marie Vinje Marcin, Valerie Jean Vinje DelCarlo, Cosette Ruth Vinje Ctvrtlik, Eric Arthur Vinje, Wesley Eugene "Chip" Hall, Jr., and Jennifer JoAnne Hall. He also leaves behind 22 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life and were a constant source of pride.
A devoted Christian, Bear was a faithful member of Bethany Bible Church, where he found community, purpose, and lifelong friendships. His service extended far beyond the church walls. He served his country with honor as a fighter-pilot Captain and Flight Instructor in the United States Marine Corps, earning the respect of all who served alongside him.
After his military career, Bear continued to lead with vision and compassion. He was active in Kiwanis International and a major contributor to The Boys and Girls Club-organizations that reflected his belief in supporting children and strengthening communities. Professionally, he excelled as a financial advisor at Crowell Weedon & Co., where his leadership and dedication left a lasting impact.
Bear also found joy in life's quieter passions. An avid golfer, he cherished time on the course, and throughout his life he held a deep love for dogs, whose companionship brought him comfort and delight.
He will be remembered for his faith, his devotion to family, and the countless lives he touched through kindness, service, and love.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 3:00 PM at Bethany Bible Church in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
