William Jennings Smith, 88, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Jennings was born in Wayne County on August 15, 1937, to the late Robert and Edna Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Terry William Oscar Smith; and his brothers, Reynolds Smith and wife Delia, Doug Smith, and Robert Lee Smith.
Jennings was a proud graduate of New Hope High School. A dedicated and determined worker from a young age, he began his career in 1957 with Kemp Furniture, where he worked for six years before joining Sutton's Automotive. His passion for learning and excellence led him to Wayne Community College, where he earned his associate degree. In 1966, he fulfilled a dream by founding Jennings Transmission. Jennings was known for his tireless work ethic, his dedication to excellence, and the genuine love and respect he had for his employees, many of whom he considered family. His entrepreneurial spirit later led him to co-found and own Jennings Steak and Seafood in Goldsboro, a business that became well known in the community.
A man of deep faith, Jennings was saved in 1963 at Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. He faithfully served the church as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and youth leader. His years of dedication to Christian education earned him recognition as Wayne County's Sunday School Superintendent of the Year by the Sunday School Association. In later years, Jennings attended Goldsboro Worship Center, where he enjoyed worshiping alongside his family and church family.
In 1990, Jennings co-founded Message of the 90's, further expanding his ministry outreach. He served for many years as a board member of WHFL-TV in Goldsboro and was a devoted supporter of gospel singings throughout the community, helping others by sharing the love of Christ. He was also instrumental in supporting ministries around the world.
Jennings often spoke of God's grace in his life, especially after surviving a plane crash-an experience he firmly believed God used to spare his life so he could continue sharing his testimony. He loved the Lord deeply and never hesitated to speak about God's goodness.
Known for his personality, quick wit, and boundless energy, Jennings was never short on words. He loved meeting people, telling stories, and catching up with friends-and if he didn't know you, he soon would. His warmth, charisma, and genuine love for others left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Jennings married Janice Jackson in 1957, and together they raised two sons whom he loved dearly. His family meant everything to him, and he took great pride in being "Papa" to his grandchildren. He was always ready to help, encourage, and support them in any way he could.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 12, 2026, from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Goldsboro Worship Center, followed by a service to celebrate Jennings' life at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary, with Pastor Danny Johnson officiating. Interment will be held Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park. At other times the family will be at the home of Shane and Stephanie Smith, 204 Bear Creek Road,
Goldsboro, NC.
Jennings is survived by his son, Christopher Shane Smith and wife, Stephanie; grandchildren, Brandon Jennings Smith (Danielle), Chad Tyler Smith (Dawson), Ashley Janine Wilkinson (Richard), and Julian Reid Bashaw; and great-grandchildren, Dalton Jennings Smith, Triston Cole Smith and Jackson Edward Shane Krueger. He is also survived by his sister, JoAnn Sauls; brother, Colin Smith and wife, Freida; sisters-in-law, Mae Smith and Pauline Smith; and several nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Gentiva Hospice for the compassionate care shown to Jennings, and to the dedicated staff of Indigo of Pikeville. Your kindness, care, and attentiveness to his needs brought great comfort and are deeply appreciated by the family.
