SCHENECTADY- William “Coach” Smith, age 88, passed away at home surrounded by family on December 26, 2025.
He was born on May 31, 1937 in Schenectady, NY to the late Helen Vroman and Lyman Smith.
Upon graduating from St. Columbus High School, William enlisted in the Army, serving as a Medic during the Korean War. After serving his country, he worked for the General Electric Company for over 40 years.
William was a devoted Coach, mentoring young athletes, teaching the importance of teamwork, discipline and perseverance. He coached with the Jaycee Little League for 40 years and St. Luke’s CYO Basketball for 35 years.
He was a parishioner and usher at St. Luke’s Church for many years.
William is reunited in Heaven with his wife of 65 years, Mary Jane Smith; his brother, George Smith and his sons: Daniel Smith, William Smith Jr.and Patrick Smith.
His memory will be forever cherished by his children: Colleen (John) Gulli, Kathleen (Keith) Culpepper, Billie Smith, Joseph (Jackie) Smith and Timothy (Terri) Smith. He is also survived by his 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his calling hours on Thursday January 8, 2026 from 12 Noon to 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 1241 State St Schenectady, NY 12304. A funeral Mass will follow at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Albany Street, Schenectady, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Community Hospice and mailed to The Community Hospice Foundation, 445 New Karner Rd, Albany, NY 12205 or to the Veterans Miracle Center, 10 Interstate Ave., Albany, NY 12205.
