William J. Steel

1970 - 2025

William Joseph Steel, 54, of Irwin, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, at Forbes Regional Medical Center. He was born in Greensburg on Oct. 30, 1970, and was the son of the late John Byers Steel II and Shirley Luczka Steel. He was the cherished grandson of the late Joseph and Esther Luczka and William and Sara Steel. William graduated from Hempfield Area High School. He attended the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland, where he joined Delta Tau Delta fraternity. After travels in Louisiana, he returned to college at Penn State's Behrend campus, where he earned Dean's List for all four semesters that he attended and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting on May 10, 1997. William was a well-regarded local business owner, investor, and friend. Throughout a long illness that robbed him of his ability to move, he had enjoyed many trips with family. When able, he continued to make weekly trips to his Greengate East Beer Distributorship, where he watched the books. In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his nephew, Michael; aunts, Jeyda and Sara; and best friends, Taylor, Lucky, and Lexi. William was a favorite uncle who could be counted on to play video games for hours at a time. Surviving are his sisters, Sissy (Ozzie) and Lisa Steel (Douglas); uncles, Joseph (Pam), Bill, and Len; nieces, Samantha (Alex) and Joyce; nephews, Jacob, Zachary, and Joseph; grandnephews, Henry and Theodore; grandniece, Sophia; cousins, Christina (Paul), Sebrina (Nick), Joaquim, Lorenzo, Lily, and Nickolas; and friends, Jason (Kelly), Mike, Sergio, Yvonne, and Roxie. He is remembered well by relatives and friends for encouraging them, employing them, and mentoring them into management and businesses. Honoring William's wishes, services are private with burial and Catholic blessing at Steel Monument Cemetery.
