William Swisher Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greenlawn Funeral Home North on May 25, 2025.
William Kelly Swisher, age 76, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away at his home on May 23, 2025. Kelly was born to Louis and Bessie (Jones) Swisher on January 3, 1949, in Springfield. Kelly was raised in Reeds Spring, Missouri, and attended school there. On September 30, 1969, Kelly proudly entered the United States Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. During his time of active duty, Kelly served overseas during the Vietnam War. His last duty assignment was serving with the 162nd Assault Helicopter Company. The 162nd had the distinction of being the last assault helicopter unit in the Delta. Kelly was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal (2 Stars), and the Vietnam Service Medal (W/60 Device). During his time in the US Army, Kelly received training as a field radio mechanic. After his honorable discharge on September 24, 1971, Kelly served in the US Army Reserves until his military obligation was fulfilled on September 29, 1975.
For several years, Kelly worked as an automotive mechanic at Chappell's Tires, Inc., in Springfield. He later worked as a self-employed mechanic, where he helped countless Springfieldians with their automotive needs. When not working, Kelly enjoyed many hobbies and pastimes. He especially enjoyed riding his motorcycle, working on cars, and participating in AMVESTS activities and events around the Ozarks. More than anything else, Kelly simply enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a hardworking man who gave of himself to serve others in need.
Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Bessie Swisher; brother, Louis Swisher, sister, Barbara Dill; and sister, Cora Riley. He is survived by his son, Kelly Swisher and his wife, Candece; his "baby girl", Melissa; eight grandchildren: William, Sutton, Heaven, Logan, Trinity, Gracè, Wesley, and Noèmi Kelia; brother, Stanley Swisher; sister, Dorothea Gramm; sister, Sharon Grigor; sister, Deborah Campbell; and sister Twyla Swisher. Kelly is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Kelly will be deeply missed by those whose life he touched.
Kelly will be laid to rest with full military honors on Friday, May 30, 2025, 10:00 am, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield. There will be a formal procession from Greenlawn Funeral Home North to the Missouri Veterans Cemetery. The procession will begin promptly at 9:30 am and will be led by the Springfield and the Greater Ozarks Area Warriors' Watch Riders.
In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests donations be made in Kelly's memory to any veteran organization.
