In Loving Memory of William (‘Bucky’to his grandchildren) E. Thompson, a lifelong resident of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025, at the age of 97. A man of quiet strength, sharp intellect, and a playful spirit, Bill lived a full and vibrant life that spanned nearly a century. Born in Columbus on October 6, 1928, to the late William White Thompson and Jessie Leota Thompson, Bill remained a proud member of the community throughout his life.

After graduating from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, he embarked on a distinguished career. Bill dedicated many years to the Defense Supply Center-Columbus (DSCC), eventually retiring as a Division Chief in Technical Operations. His leadership and technical expertise left a lasting impact on his profession and his colleagues.

Outside of his professional life, Bill was a man of many interests. He was an avid fisherman who found peace on the water, a hobby that extended into a passion for collecting antique fishing gear. On the weekends, he could often be found scouting local garage sales or visiting antique shops, always on the hunt for a unique find to share with his children and grandchildren.

Above all, Bill’s greatest joy was his family; he cherished every moment spent with those he loved, whether sharing a story or a quiet afternoon together.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Cherie (Archer) Thompson. He leaves behind a large and loving family who will carry on his legacy: Bill is survived by his daughters: Pamela Vansky (Terry), Karen Morris, and Laurie Hegedus (Bob); his stepchildren: Mark Hiser (Charles Caldwell) and Jodi Coffield (Jim); his grandchildren: Silas (Mariya), Harrison (Rachel), Maddy, Alex, Erica (Howard), Shea (Carter), Andrew, and Rachel; as well as seven cherished great-grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his stepson Craig Hiser.

In accordance with Bill’s wishes, the family will not be holding a formal funeral service at this time. Instead, an Open House celebration for family and close friends will be held at a later date.

In honor of Bill’s memory, the family suggests spending a morning at the Hoover reservoir, visiting a neighborhood garage sale, or enjoying a cold root beer float — three things Bill truly loved.
