In memory of
WILLIAM A BELOTE JR
January 19, 2026
My hero, Bill Tym was my teammate at the University of Florida. I watched him from his junior year in high school at the Bolles Academy in Jacksonville, Florida where he was named an All-State athlete in five different sports: football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and track.
He was my friend, counselor, role model, and hero from 1963 for a period of over 60 years. Without a doubt, he positively affected the lives of hundreds of people. A walking encyclopedia of tennis, he was kind-hearted, thoughtful, generous, loyal, and a genuine leader as well as outstanding teacher of tennis. I am a better person because of him.

From having to compete against your incredibly tough students, to working alongside & being mentored by you at Vanderbilt tennis to many years later working with my daughter I was fortunate to have you in my life as a teacher & mentor. The tennis world is better because of you....

His love of the game and his students was second to none. We all are eternally grateful that you impacted our lives on the court, but far more significantly off the court with your kindness and support.

I'm one of the Indonesian tennis players that was blessed to receive his mentorship. All the way, from 1983, until now. He has been the positive voice in my life, and has mentored me in coaching, as well as in life. His encouragement to me will be missed.

Like so many others, Bill Tym had a huge influence on my life. His knowledge, integrity and the professional example that he always displayed motivated and encouraged all of us that loved and respected him . My friendship and his mentorship to me extended to a sixty year span. During that entire time he never disappointed me or let me down. When I was watching Ben Shelton play on the tennis channel these past few years I knew that Bill would be watching from Nashville also and I enjoyed thinking about what his thoughts and comments would have been. Bill´s passing will leave a huge hole in the hearts of all those of us who´ve been so positively impacted by Bill´s influence. Bill Lofgren
