William G. Young, 90, of Colebrook passed away peacefully on Nov. 23, 2023 while in Hospice Care at Charolotte Hungerford Hospital. Known as Bill, he was born in Stamford, Connecticut to Clifton Young and Lillian (Mitchell) Young. As a youth, he spent many afternoons helping his father at the family business which was a machine shop called Young and Hartwright. It was expected he would eventually take over his father's business; however, after graduating high school in 1951, he joined the US Navy and was stationed at Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn, NY.
Upon discharge from the Navy he was hired as a residential installer for the Southern New England Telephone Company. He worked there for 31 years and in 1986 he retired as an Installation and Repair Foreman. In the 1960's and 1970's he was very involved with the West Norwalk United Congregational Church and served as a deacon for many years. While he was in Norwalk he was also a member of the American Legion Post #12.
After moving to Colebrook in 1996, he joined Colebrook Congregational Church, Colebrook Land Conservancy and the Colebrook Lions Club. He was also a member of the VFW in Winsted.
He loved camping, especially in Vermont where he had a seasonal campsite for 45 years. He also toured the country in a motorhome. In his younger days he enjoyed fishing, bowling and golf. His favorite hobbies were woodworking and duck carving, examples of which he had on display in his home.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Isobel (Robertson) Young in 2012. And is survived by his son, John Young (Carol); his daughter Barbara Wetmore (Gregg); 4 grandsons, Matthew Wetmore (Danielle), Andrew Wetmore (Jessica), William J. Young (Regina), Brian Young; and 3 great grandchildren, Samantha, Olivia and Henry Wetmore.
Friends may call on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted from 4 - 6:30 p.m. with a funeral service at 6:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at South Cemetery, Colebrook with Military Honors.
