In Loving Memory of William (Bill) Zuercher
On the evening of November 11, 2023, William (Bill) Zuercher, a cherished member of the Marshalltown community, peacefully passed away at the age of 90 at the Iowa River Hospice Home. Bill's legacy is marked by his dedication to family, community, and service.
Cremation rites have been accorded, and while no formal services are planned at this time, the family invites you to share condolences at www.mitchellfh.com or by calling 641-844-1234.
Born on February 24, 1933, to George and Grace in Marshalltown, Iowa, Bill was a proud alumnus of Marshalltown High School and Iowa State University, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. A proud and distinguished Army veteran, Bill served in Japan from 1956 to 1958.
On June 14, 1958, Bill married the love of his life, Nadena Joyce McDowell, and together they built their home in Marshalltown, raising two sons. Bill's commitment to community prosperity was evident throughout his career as a retired executive and co-owner of Cooper Manufacturing.
A pillar of Marshalltown, Bill was named Citizen of the Year in 1996. His civic engagement extended to roles on the Marshalltown City Council, planning and zoning commission, and presidency of the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce in 1984-85. He served as chairman of the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center board of trustees from 1988-1993.
Bill's philanthropic spirit led him to various organizations, including the United Way, Salvation Army, Private Industry Council, and the Marshall County Conservation Board. Active in the Marshalltown Rotary Club, he served as president in 1996 and received the Ken Brintnall Award for Service. Bill's commitment to service was recognized by Governor Terry Branstad with the Iowa Volunteer Award in 1989 and 1990.
In retirement, Bill found joy in fishing, woodworking, and stained glass crafts. Above all, he cherished his role as a loving grandfather.
Bill is survived by his sons, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Nadena, parents, George and Grace; his sisters Joan Hemphill and Jeanette Perisho.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you join in honoring Bill's generous spirit by directing memorials in his name to the Iowa River Hospice at https://www.iowariverhospice.org/donate/contributions or to the Story Medical Center in Nevada at https://www.storymedical.org/foundation/make-a-donation. These organizations provided him with compassionate and exceptional care.
Bill's legacy lives on in the vibrant community he helped shape and the hearts of those who knew him. May he rest in peace.
