Late 60's Cincinnati vs Pirates at Crosley Field. Saw him hit one near our seats, 2nd level above third base, very exciting. My lovely wife had taken me to my first major league baseball game as she was a Pirate fan,

First I would like to give the family my deepest sympathy for the lost of a all time outstanding player and the great moments in watching him play the all American baseball games along with my uncle with the Pittsburg Pirates Pitcher#36 Ramon Hernandez( Gonzalez) for he is and always will be missed.

Willie-

Your homers were like thunder in the sky. I wish that leaders in ALL areas had the ability that you had to command respect and, more importantly, turn men into ballplayers. Take care up there.

Pops,

Your passing has left a great void not only in the game of baseball, but in the game of life as well. Your ability to not only function, but excel at something as difficult as the game of baseball in the face of prejudice and hatred speaks volumes as to how great a man you really were.

The memory of you I will always keep is from Game 7 of the 1979 World Series. At the age of 39, you went four for four with the game-winning homerun off of Mike Flanagan. The lasting images of the ball landing in the bleachers, the pitchers in the Pittsburgh bullpen celebrating, and you touching home plate and hugging the batboy are indelible in my mind. I am a baseball fan for life, in part because of these moments, and I thank you for the happiness you've brought me.

My deepest sympathies to your family.

"Pops",

You were a pleasure to watch in the days of "The Family". Imitating you on the wiffle ball field is one of my favorite childhood baseball memories. The game has truly lost a great man and player.

My condolences to your family.

I used to hate to see you come into Wrigley Field and demolish my poor Cubbies. Yet, your majestic home runs were a beauty to behold, no matter what your allegiance.

You were a credit to the game of baseball and will be sorely missed by all, even those pitchers who might still be shaking with the thought of you walking into the batters box.

My sincere condolences to the family.
