Willis Almer received his Christmas wish to "go home" on December 30, 2025. After deciding in mid-November to stop trying to fix his failing body, he spent his remaining days at Missouri Slope, Bismarck, ND, in the company of his family and friends. With family present, he passed away peacefully in the morning and was welcomed into his heavenly home.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Tues, Jan. 6, 2026, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm, with a time of sharing beginning at 6:00 pm, Mon, Jan. 5, 2026, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Willis "Buddy" Almer was born on July 22, 1927, in Goodrich, ND, to Fred and Eva (Schick) Almer. He grew up on the family farm with his siblings, and the "Almer boys" had a well-deserved bad reputation. He had only an 8th-grade education but was intelligent and well-informed.

Willis had a variety of jobs throughout his life, including farming, breaking horses, and working on the railroad. He started work with the City of Bismarck in 1951, where he initially sanded roads (using a shovel), graded roads, collected garbage, and eventually operated heavy machinery at the landfill. He retired in 1989. He liked his jobs, but his passions were his family, community, and faith.

Willis married the love of his life, Jennie Bennett, on September 13, 1948. As their love for each other grew, so did their family. They were blessed with 7 children, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He loved spending time with all of them, teaching them how to enjoy life.

A few years into their marriage, they both made a commitment to follow God. Willis made restitution and served in various roles at his church for decades. His faith was strong, steady, and personal. All who stayed in his home saw his commitment to reading his Bible and praying every morning. He became known as a man of kindness, faithfulness, and integrity.

Willis was known for salvaging wagons, bicycles, and anything else repairable. He refurbished them and gave them to families in the neighborhood. He participated in Bismarck's recycling program from the first day. You could find him outside in all kinds of weather. He loved walking, ice skating, mini golf, picnics, picking plums from his trees, and caring for his yard.

Willis was greatly liked; he had a teasing sense of humor that made people feel comfortable. He loved and was loved deeply. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Willis was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 75 years, Jennie; his children, Dale Almer, Roxann Giles, and (infant) Mary Ann; his grandson, Scott Knudson; his parents; and all his siblings.

He is survived by his children, Diane Almer, Brenda (Mark) Fetting, Barry (Lisa) Almer, Becky (Cory) Thrall; daughter-in-law, Linda; son-in-law, Stephen; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, including those from his daughter Brenda's marriage to Mark.
