Willis T. Watkins, a beloved family man and career engineer, passed away peacefully on November 14th, 2024, in Shawnee, Kansas at the age of 98. Born on April 5th, 1926, Willis dedicated his life to his profession, community, and his family, leaving behind a legacy characterized by kindness and unwavering positivity.

Throughout his career, Willis worked as an engineer, focusing on the design of plastic safety equipment, such as glasses and goggles, as well as the machines used in their production. Willis was distinguished not only by his professional achievements but also by his warmth and caring nature. Family and friends remember him as a sweet individual who was always smiling and loved to tell jokes, with the ability to remain calm and composed even in challenging situations. His gentle demeanor and loving spirit were hallmarks of his character, endearing him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Willis was not only dedicated to his family and career, he was also dedicated to his faith and community. He was an active member of the Hickman Mills Community Christian Church, where he served for many years as an elder, a member of the church choir and as volunteer repairman. His commitment to his church underscored his belief in community service and the importance of uplifting those around him. Willis also proudly served in the Navy during World War II for two years and in the Army reserve, both experiences that reflected his deep sense of duty and honor.

Outside of his professional and community life, Willis enjoyed a variety of hobbies that brought him joy and fulfillment. He was passionate about gardening and collecting and repairing vintage radios, both pastimes that displayed his technical savvy and love for classic craftsmanship. He also embraced his role as parent and grandparent, relishing time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his brother, Everett Watkins; his children, Pat Valentine, Gary Watkins (Dot) and Sharon Bryant (Jeff); his grandchildren, Matt Moore (Lyssa), Chris Moore (Danny), Shelley Gentsch (Chad), Andrew Watkins, Donna McCague (Dan), and Christine Spader (Dan); and great-grandchildren, Ava Gentsch, Sammy Spader, Zoe Gentsch, Kennedy McCague, Ben Spader and Jeffrey McCague.

Willis is preceded in death by his father, William Watkins, his mother, Ethel Armstrong Watkins, his wife of 75 years, Maxine Geiger Watkins, his sisters, Lura Hull and Wilma Gus and his grandson, Jeremy Moore.

As we remember Willis T. Watkins, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, generosity, and an enduring love for his family and community. His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him. A visitation and service will be held on Monday, December 9th, at Longview Funeral Home.
