Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hampton Funeral Homes - Hillsdale on Dec. 18, 2025.
Gene Wells of Osseo went to be with his Savior on Thursday, December 11, 2025. Gene was born on January 1, 1934, in Portland, Ohio, to Earl and Clara Wells. Gene is survived by his wife, Elsie (Singer) Wells, whom he married on July 2, 1955. Two sons, Gregory (Melaney) Wells of Hillsdale, and Christopher Wells of Coldwater, Michigan. He was a loving grandfather to 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in passing by his parents and his sister, Wilma. Gene was drafted into the Navy in 1956, where he served for 2 years during the Korean War on a carrier, the "Leyte." After serving in the Navy, Gene drove truck for 30 years. He drove for the U.S. Mail and then founded G.W.D. Express INC. After retiring, he attended Barber College and worked as a barber for 13 years. Gene was a Sunday School Superintendent for 40-plus years and was very active in his church.
Gene's special interests were golfing and bowling. Gene golfed a hole in one on August 6, 2020, and bowled a 300 game on March 13, 2000. He never missed his sports, no matter how sick he was, and he loved his yard and gardening. Gene was known for saying, "My love for sports and good health is a gift from God. What I do with it then is a gift to God." Gene and Elsie were married for 72 years, and he was headed to his 92nd birthday. His family gives a special thank you to Hospice of Hillsdale County for the special care given to Gene. Cremation has taken place, and a private graveside service will take place in the spring of 2026.
For those who wish, a memorial contribution can be given to Hospice of Hillsdale County, located at 124 South Howell Street, Hillsdale, Michigan 49242
