Sunset Funeral Homes - West - El PasoIn Loving Memory of Mr. Winfried Stevens
Winfried Stevens, 89, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, in El Paso, Texas, surrounded by family.
Born December 2, 1936, in Bingen-Büdesheim, Germany, Winfried lived a long life of love and devotion to his wife and family. As a lifelong Catholic, Winfried was devout in his faith. He was a principled man that adhered to his core beliefs and moral sense of responsibility. He believed in hard work, being a good citizen and in serving his community. Winfried shared his life with his beloved wife and soulmate, Ernestina, who passed away five months ago.
Winfried left Germany and arrived in the United States in 1957 to build a better life for himself. He lived and worked in California before settling in El Paso. He met his wife in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Though they didn’t speak the same language, they shared similar values and beliefs, hopes and dreams, and quickly fell in love and married. They settled in Sunland Park, New Mexico where Winfried purchased land and built his home. They were active members of San Martin de Porres Catholic Church and helped build the original church, the first Catholic Church in Sunland Park. As one of the earliest residents of Sunland Park, Winfried and his wife were engaged citizens and supporters of the Sunland Park community, helping to establish Mt. Cristo Rey and working on community and environmental improvements. Winfried was instrumental in establishing Sunland Park’s Volunteer Fire Department and was proud to have served as the Assistant Volunteer Fire Chief.
Winfried worked in construction for The Paul Little Company and Ed-Co Company. He started his career installing floor tile and then for many years installed acoustical drop ceilings. He learned to be an accomplished welder and handy man who used his talents and diligence to help support his family. He was a skilled craftsman who worked on countless jobs in El Paso, New Mexico and other US locations.
He is survived by his four children and their spouses, Richard (Lynda) Stevens, Elizabeth (Michael) Fitzhugh, Laura (Freddy) Provencio, and Robert (Lynnann) Stevens. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Marcus Holguin, Ellyse Provencio, Freddy Provencio, Jr. and Neida (Javier) Villagomez, great-grandchild Isleya Luna Villagomez, his brother Reiner (Hans-Jörg) of Berlin, Germany and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Else and siblings Hedy, Herbert, Ursula, and Renate.
Winfried stayed active by playing golf until his late 80’s and by walking almost every day at the Sunland Park (The Solana) Mall for many years. He had a wry sense of humor and loved to spend time with his family. He will be greatly missed. May his memory be a blessing.
