Mary Winifred Watson Arnold, affectionately known as "Wini", passed away peacefully on January 27, 2025, at the age of 98. She was born to the late Thomas and Esther Watson on October 29, 1926, in Wake County, North Carolina. Winifred grew up in
Knightdale, NC, where she lived on the farm with her four siblings.
She enjoyed gardening among the hummingbirds and relished the simple joys of life- savoring a sweet treat and spending time with her family. Wini took great pride in her faith, becoming a member of Hollands United Methodist Church in 1961 alongside her late husband, Hubert Cullom Arnold. There, Wini and Cullom sang in the choir and participated in mission trips, becoming beloved members of the congregation.
Winifred retired as the Executive Secretary for the State Board Licensing Division of Plumbing and Heating Contractors. She was known for her honesty, strength, and unwavering love for her family and friends. Wini made a point to connect with people wherever she went, and even in her final months, she continued to bring joy to those around her. She took pride in serving as wife, mother, grandmother, honorary grandmother, and matriarch to many in her close and extended family.
Funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm, Monday, February 3, 2025, at Holland's Church, 9433 Ten-Ten Rd, Raleigh. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives prior to the service, from 11:00 to 11:45 am, at the church.
Winifred is survived by her son, David Arnold of Wilmington, NC, his wife, Lottie, and her cherished granddaughter, Cate.
In addition to her parents, Winifred is preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Cullom Arnold, who passed away in 1980; her eldest son, Tommy, who passed in 2007; siblings: Thomas Earl, Rachel, Faye, and Jackie.
Wini was once asked about the secret to a long life, and she replied with her trademark wit and wisdom: "God, a good man, and a good margarita." She was indeed blessed with all three. She lived a life full of love, laughter, and faith. Winifred was the first of her siblings to enter the world and was the last to leave the party. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit, love, and faith will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Much love and gratitude to the staff of Spring Arbor Senior Living and Lower Cape Fear LifeCare of Wilmington, for their compassionate care.
