Wm. Riley Hemingway Jr., a dedicated steward of the land and a beloved family man, passed away on March 26, 2026 at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in the soil he so lovingly tended. Born on May 20, 1929, he spent his entire life on the same land where he cultivated corn for an astounding 61 years, proudly owning and operating Hemingway Farms.
Throughout his life, Riley's connection to farming was more than a profession—it was his passion. His days were filled with the rhythm of the seasons and the hum of his beloved Farmall tractors, a hobby that complemented his tireless work. He cherished traveling with his wife, making journeys to visit their children, and attending tractor shows that celebrated the machinery he admired.
Riley is survived by his brothers, George "Wally" Hemingway and Ralph J. Hemingway; his brother-in-law, Howard Brewster; and his children, Mark Clay and Julie Howerton, who were a meaningful part of his life. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and grandchildren who carry forward the family name and spirit.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Nellie Brewster, whose memory remains treasured.
Riley’s life was one of steadfast devotion—to his family, his farm, and a way of life that he honored daily. His enduring commitment to the land, and his gentle presence in the lives of those who knew him, will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the McLean Church.
Calling hours for Riley will be held on April 1, 2026 at Perkins Funeral Home from 10:00-11:00AM with a Funeral service at 11am at the funeral home and burial to follow at McLean Cemetery.
