Wolf Kahn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 2, 2010.
Wolf was born in Ludwigshafen am Rheine, Germany to Alice and Richard Kahn on October 2, 1921. As a youth he was an accomplished student of art and an avid swimmer. He was a holocaust survivor, forced to wear a yellow armband, having left Germany at age fourteen with his mother and brothers to enter America via Baltimore. He enlisted in the US Army Air Force after a short course of study in art at the Maryland Institute of Art. He was initially stationed in Miami, Florida and transferred to Orlando in 1942. He was involved with espionage by being quartered with German submariners. He met his bride to be, Tybe Wittenstein, at a USO event. They were married in Daytona Beach on July 6, 1944. He began his business career in display at Sears and Roebuck in Orlando and soon entered the jewelry business at Ferrell Jewelry. He ventured on his own to open Wolf’s Jewelry in 1957. His business grew to the notice of the Walt Disney Company for whom he designed. He developed the fine jewelry stores of the Magic Kingdom, Lake Buena Vista and the Tokyo Disneyland project. In his retirement, he worked with close friends John Glenn and Mark & Hedy Blinderman. He promoted the Dale Carnegie programs as well. He participated with the American Red Cross water safety instructor programs and the Orlando area public pools. He was an active advocate to race relations to build confidence among members of the Black community through swimming programs. He served as coach to the Jones High School Swim Team. He is the only non-student to be presented a letter at Jones High School. He was active in the Holocaust Memorial and Education Center, the Jewish-American War Veterans and he was active in the Disney Retirees. He was awarded with “Wolf Kahn Day by the City of Orlando. In January, 2009, he was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Brady. He is survived by his wife, Tybell Wittenstein Kahn, sons, Robert (Flory) and Bernard (Valerie), his brothers Arthur of Ft. Lauderdale, and Fritz of Washington D.C. He has six grandchildren, two great granddaughters, and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
