Yvonne Brooks Downey

Mrs. Yvonne Brooks Downey, age seventy-four, departed this life and entered into eternal rest Monday, December 30, 2024 at her home in Timberlake, North Carolina. She was born in Durham County May 10, 1950 to the late Jessie Brooks and Eula Sanders Brooks and at an early age, was a member of Henderson Grove Missionary Baptist Church before joining New Saint James Missionary Baptist Church in Timberlake where she served on the Usher Board, was President of the Kitchen Committee, director of the Youth Choir and President of the Senior Chorus.
Yvonne transferred to Jordan High School and graduated from Merrick-Moore in Durham. She worked at Burger King for forty years until "she got fed up with them!"
She united in Holy Matrimony to the Reverend Chester Downey. She loved singing and did a marvelous job. Her favorite songs were "Take A Trip On The Good Ol' Gospel Ship" and her mother's song, "I Feel Good."
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Turner.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories, her husband, Reverend Chester Downey of Timberlake; a daughter, Kaynatta Downey of Hartford, Connecticut; three sons: Quincy Crawford (Carolyn) and James Crawford (Karen), both of Durham and Rico Downey of Middletown, New York; ten grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; three sisters: Mary Burton and Nellie Bullock (Clarence), both of Durham and Jacqueline Rogers (Jimmy) of Mebane, North Carolina; one brother, Willie Brooks (Pattie) of Raleigh, North Carolina; aunts: Marylene Taborn, Mary Alice Foust, Thelma Jones and Brenda Summers, all of Burlington, North Carolina and Jean Alston of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; sisters-in-law: Laura Garner of Haw River, North Carolina and Tammy Lunsford of Yanceyville, North Carolina; brothers-in-law: Larry, Barry, Stanley, Bruce, Howard and Ira; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at 1:00pm at the New St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 4130 Pixley-Pritchard Road in Timberlake, North Carolina 27583 with the Reverend Shaun J. Woods, Pastor, officiating and providing the eulogy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors during the one hour prior to the start of the service and her body will lie in state from 12:00pm to 1:00pm.
