Zane Windsor Mitchell, Jr., age 62, of Evansville, Indiana passed away at his home on Saturday, April 27, 2024 after a lengthy illness. Zane was born on October 24, 1961 in Columbus, Ohio. He was a son of Zane Windsor Mitchell, Sr. and Dolores Vargo Mitchell of Waynesburg.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife Robyn Krutchkoff; sons Keith Mitchell and Bryan Mitchell all of the state of Indiana; brother, Greg (Lisa) Mitchell of Lemont Furnace; niece, Kaitlin Conlogue of Uniontown and nephew, Garrett Mitchell of Pittsburgh.

Zane was a 1979 graduate of Carmichaels Area High School and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

He was a 1983 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and received his Masters and PhD from Virginia Tech University throughout his military career. Zane served in the United States Air Force for 26 years as a decorated pilot and retired as a Colonel. He earned the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and the Command Pilot badge among his many accomplishments.

Zane served as the Dean and Professor of Engineering at Pott College of Science at the University of Southern Indiana after his military retirement. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Society of Engineering Education.

Zane was an avid cyclist. He participated and competed in many bicycle races and would routinely ride his bike over 100 miles a day.

A memorial service was held on May 8, 2024 in Evansville, Indiana. Burial will take place on December 5, 2024 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. The services will begin at 9:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vanderburgh County Humane Society, 400 Millner Industrial Drive, Evansville, Indiana 47710.
