Obituary published on Legacy.com by Parrish Funeral Home - Selma on Apr. 28, 2025.
Zane Grey Williams, age 87, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025, in his home surrounded by his family.
Born, January 17, 1938, in Wallace-Rose Hill, North Carolina. Zane grew up on a farm in Duplin County, the youngest of the Williams family. Always full of spirit and ambition, he made his way from the fields to the basketball courts of Wallace-Rose Hill High School, where he played with pride and participated actively in the Future Farmers of America (FFA). Zane was fortunate to find the love of his life early on when, at just 17 years old, he met Betty Blanton, who was 15 at the time. Betty became his lifelong companion, best friend, and trusted partner both in life and in business.
Determined to carve his own path, Zane earned a scholarship to Pfeiffer College before transferring to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Though he left UNC in his senior year to pursue opportunity, his lifelong work ethic and natural talent paved the way for a remarkable career. Zane proudly served in the North Carolina National Guard for eight years, demonstrating his deep sense of duty and commitment to his community and country.
Over the course of his life, Zane embraced many roles. He began his career at Nationwide Insurance before he and Betty ventured into entrepreneurship, building several businesses together. Ultimately, Zane found his true calling as a commercial contractor and residential real estate developer. Through his hard work, creativity, and vision, he helped shape communities and create homes that stand as lasting testaments to his dedication.
But Zane's life was never defined solely by his work. He lived fully and joyfully, perhaps even more passionately in the moments of play than in business. A man of many hobbies and talents, he found freedom in flying airplanes, camaraderie on the golf course, and peace on fishing trips. His love of life was contagious, and his laughter and adventurous spirit made him a favorite among family and friends.
Zane was the proud father of three children, a loving grandfather to five grandchildren, and a cherished great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren. Family was the heart of his world, and held a special place in the hearts of all who knew him. The baby of the Williams family, Zane's warmth, humor, and deep generosity touched everyone who had the privilege of sharing his life.
Zane Grey Williams will be remembered not just for what he built, but for how he lived: with kindness, vitality, and spirit of true enjoyment. His legacy of love, laughter, hard work, and a life well lived. He was a good man, deeply loved, and deeply missed.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Mrs. Betty Blanton Williams; his three children, Daneille Williams and husband (Stephen Callis), Elizabeth Williams and Anthony Williams and wife (Elaine); and his five grandchildren, David Sapp, Logan Williams, Richard Sapp, Kalen Williams and Zane Walker Williams, Jr. He is also survived by his older brother, Charles Justice Williams; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma.
