Ms. Zelma Mason, a beacon of love and faith, departed this earthly realm on January 19, 2026. Born on May 1, 1933, in
Lumberton, North Carolina, Zelma was a cherished daughter of Charlie Russell Faulk and Nina McKinley Faulk, whose legacy of compassion and unwavering dedication will resonate through the lives she touched.
From a young age, Ms. Mason exhibited an extraordinary talent as a seamstress, honing her craft at a design school that would see her contribute skillfully to the aerospace industry with unmatched precision and accuracy. As the only African American woman at her factory (because of her precision and accuracy in designing pieces for aircrafts), she played a pivotal role in creating components for NASA spacecraft and military aircraft, earning the admiration of many, including the pilot who famously flew the plane that ended the war in Japan-a testament to her exceptional abilities.
Zelma's profound faith first flourished during her years as a devoted ordained missionary at the Bethel Tabernacle Baptist Church in Jamaica, New York. Her heart brimmed with love as she devoted herself to visiting nursing homes and outreach centers, embodying the spirit of service. At the New York School of Urban Ministry, she diligently packed food, distributed essentials, and offered her support wherever it was needed-her hands always reaching out, as her heart embraced all in need.
Relocating to
Talladega, Alabama, her spiritual journey continued at the First Methodist Church, where she found solace and joy. Treasured moments in the front row of her church filled her with happiness, especially during her surprise birthday celebration organized by the Women's Bible Study. Zelma's resilience shone even as her health began to decline, her spirit forever buoyed by a steadfast "can-do" attitude, and she remained a source of inspiration to her family and friends. She enjoyed the kindness of Larry Barnes who would pick up her to come to church and bring her home. He also took her to other events that made her feel special. Ms. Mason loved the Lord and would read and study as much as she could. The family would like to thank everyone who showed her so much love and kindness.
Ms. Mason transitioned to eternal life surrounded by the warmth of her beloved daughter, Sophia Aldridge, and the embrace of cherished memories with her twin daughters, Barbara Hill and Deborah Mason along with three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and her loving church family. She now rejoices with her departed loved ones, including her parents, her devoted husband Walter L. Mason, and her eleven siblings.
In these moments of reflection, let us remember her not only as a beloved mother and grandmother but as a pillar of strength and kindness who flourished through every season of life. Her spirit will continue to inspire us, guiding us in our own journeys.
May her soul rest in peace, secure in the embrace of divine love, as we celebrate the light she brought into our lives. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who have shown her kindness and love throughout her remarkable journey.
