Evelyn Eva Pocekay

Evelyn Eva Pocekay

1929 - 2021

Evelyn Eva Pocekay passed away early Friday morning, January 29, after a long battle with dementia and a short one with COVID-19. She was 91.

Evelyn was born on December 7, 1929 in Richmond, California to Peter and Madeline Pauletich. She turned 12 on the day Pearl Harbor was bombed, and spent the war years managing people trying to shop at the family neighborhood grocery store. Whenever someone left the store, she would let the next person in, just to keep the store from being so crowded that no one could move. We were all reminded of this history in light of the current pandemic. On June 20, 1948, she married Emil Tony Pocekay, and with him, raised 2 sons, Dennis and John, and a daughter, Janet.

Evelyn was good at math, and was taught accounting by her father. When she and Emil took over the store after Peter's early death, she was the accountant. Outside of work she found a number of ways to enjoy life. Travel was one of her dearest passions. Whether enjoying dinner and theater in San Francisco with friends, spending summer vacations in Graeagle with family, or venturing to many other cities throughout the states and globe, Evelyn always kept things going with her gift of conversation. She enjoyed card games of all kinds and large family gatherings on holidays. She always was sure to make the latest rave in cakes and fabulous table centerpieces. And she lived for her children, constantly supporting and encouraging them in all their activities.

In 1973, she and Emil sold their store in Richmond, and moved to Napa, to build a small shopping center and open a liquor/convenience store. In Napa, she enjoyed learning golf, as well as arranging a yearly "Girls Day Out" to the annual Queen of the Valley fashion show fundraiser at Silverado Country Club. She was also a regular participant in activities at St. Apollinaris Catholic Church, and those of the Emblem Club branch of the Napa Elks' Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Dick, her sister, Yvonne, and her granddaughter Erica. She is survived by her children, 7 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 26, at Christ the King in Pleasant Hill at 10 am. The mass may also be viewed remotely. Contact Janet for more information regarding this option. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Kindred Hospice.

I met Evelyn from her son John, Evelyn was always there to support her family during the good & the bad times. My favorite memories of Evelyn is when she attended her grandddaughters Jenny & Sara's high school graduation in 1998 & 1999 @ Vintage H.S. in Napa.
