Flora S. Hasty, 87, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, died peacefully at home on August 29, 2025 in Napa, California. Predeceased by her husband Richard George Hasty.
Survived by her four children: Barbara L. (Robert) Keaton, Richard J. (Ana) Hasty, Steven G. (Johanna) Hasty, and Vicki L. (Benedict) Barrios. Eleven Grandchildren: Angela M. (Kyle) Witsil, Nicholas M. (Erin) Billings. Sarah Emilia Hasty, Richard George Hasty, James Cristian Hasty, Mark (Brienne) Lake, Sheridan (Mike) Waller, Gregery (Mikessa) Lake, Stevie-Nicole Hasty, Benedict J. (Jenna) Barrios, Jr. and Blake J. Barrios; fourteen great-grandchildren and long-time close family friend, Robert Schlager.
She was born into humble beginnings in Limington, Maine. While in high school at Limington Academy, she met the love of her life, Richard. They were married on June 23, 1957 and came to Napa County California for work at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1964. Flora described herself as the "Chief cook and bottle washer," but she handled all of the household matters, while raising four children. She taught herself to cook, bake and sew. She grew a vegetable garden and made everything from scratch. She never wasted anything, even enjoying canned green bean juice as her morning "tea."
She was an active volunteer at Donaldson Way Elementary doing everything from yard duty, chairman of the annual carnival fundraiser, to PTA President and was well thought of in the Rancho Del Mar community.
Flora and Richard began purchasing real estate "fixer-uppers" where Richard did the building renovations while she passed him tools, did the painting, the errands and managed the budgets. They loved being together while working on their future. When Richard passed unexpectedly in 1990, Flora continued to manage and maintain the real estate rentals with the help of her children.
At home, Flora created an environment of safety, support and unconditional love. She believed in empowering her children and grandchildren (and everyone else she helped raise) to pursue their dreams while always being there to offer wisdom and encouragement. One of her often spoken phrases was,"Life's a bowl of cherries, with a lot of pits."
She was the heart of the family and her kitchen was the gathering place. Most notably, Saturday night Boston Baked Beans where the entire family was often present. The cacophony of voices and laughter could be heard down the block. Family and guests alike attended holiday meals and impromptu get togethers, always feeling welcome. Her pies were LEGENDARY and everyone had a different favorite . . . so, of course, she chose to make five different flavors. Everyone felt loved.
She was an avid supporter of the underdog and contributed to many charities that helped children including Hanna Boys Center,
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Catholic Charities. She was a regular volunteer at St. John's Catholic Church.
She will be forever loved and missed.
A private family graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to Hanna Boys Center. Flora S Hasty
