Phillip Runkey Obituary

Phillip ("Phil") Charles Runkey of American Canyon, California, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at the age of 68. Phil was born on January 13, 1957, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Phil worked hard his whole life and was a respected master roofer/shingler. He was most proud of his own company, Colt Roofing, founded in 1985. In his later years, he continued to share his expertise as an inspector for various companies. Those who knew him appreciated his sharp wit and dry sense of humor (including his love for the Three Stooges).

Phil loved his family above all else and was incredibly proud of his children, Casey and Corey. His granddaughters Hailey and Addison were the light of his life, and he loved the daily photos/video chats. Phil was so looking forward to having everyone at home for Christmas this year and we will honor that wish.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Beverly Runkey, father-in-law Richard Dimmick, father-in-law Loren Puterbaugh.

Phil is survived by his wife of 43 years, Debbie Runkey; daughter Casey Moore (Roger), son Corey Runkey (Emma), granddaughters Hailey and Addison, brother Frederick Runkey, Jr., in-laws Rich & Kathy Dimmick, Dave & Lori Dimmick, and a loving extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Phil had many longtime close friends, including those in the roofing community and Blue Oyster Cult fanbase.

Arrangements will be handled by Neptune Society. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Phil's honor to the American Lung Association(www.lung.org) or to a charity of your choice.

Phil was a great friend and boss and will be missed. throughout the years, he was always generous with his time and professional advice. I still remember one of my first tasks as an apprentice on his crew was to flip the Black Sabbath tape so it played on loop all day!
I will always remember Phil as someone who lived life on his own terms, I always admired him for that.

My condolences to Debbie and all family members. I will never forget my friend Phil

Phil Runkey was a consummate roof inspector. He had the unique ability to talk-shop with workers and at the same time respectively point out less than okay work for correction. Phil was often asked for by name when a long-term, full-time-construction observation project came in. His motto, "Any place. Any time. " proved true every time with a smile I called on him... with the possible exception of a roof inspection in Green River, Wyoming during an unusually bitter cold snap. Phil did the job but never let John Goveia and me forget about it! Phil Dregger, former President of Technical Roof Services, Concord, CA

It's so hard to wrap my head around Phil being gone. I always thought he was too ornery and stubborn to leave us. He was one of my best friends, and I will never forget him. So long, my Old Pal. So sorry that he's gone.

We go back all the way to North Middlesex. His marriage of 43 years, children and grandchildren are great accomplishments. He predicted I would mellow out, well he was right, but loud and proud back then. We will donate to American Lung in Phillip´s name.

I´m so sorry for your loss. Phil was always fun to be around-never a dull moment. He loved his family and friends with such a big heart. One of my funniest memories is the camouflage blanket I made him for his birthday. He even called me to say he could hide from Debbie in it, laughing the whole time. He loved her so deeply. We will miss him dearly. Please let us know it you need anything. Sending strength and love to your family.

I will miss his dry sense of humor. The comments that didn't land until several moments later when he was halfway thru the next comment and I would laugh.

He always called me Red, even when my hair wasn't so red anymore.

Phil danced with me at Casey's wedding and had a meaningful conversation with me.

I shall miss him.
