Carol Virkus Obituary

Carol Ann Virkus (nee Ensworth), age 80, of Naperville, IL and formerly of Villa Park, IL, died suddenly on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born on May 4, 1942, in Oak Park, IL.

Beloved wife of William and cherished mother of David (Michael) of Downers Grove, IL and Susan Dravo (Mike) also of Downers Grove, IL. Dear sister of Bruce Ensworth of Woodstock, GA, and sister-in-law of George (Samantha) Virkus of Poolesville, MD. Fond Aunt, great-aunt, and friend of many. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Millard and Estelle Ensworth and by her brother-in-law, Frederick Virkus.

Carol was a 1965 graduate of Northern Illinois University and earned her master's degree from National Louis University. She had a long career in education, having taught at Hawthorne and Field Schools in Elmhurst between 1965 and 1969. She returned to education in 1985 working at Emerson School in Elmhurst, and later Lincoln School and Stone School in Addison before retiring in 2001. During her career, she forged strong bonds with her students and fellow teachers, having taught grades 2-5 as well as serving as a reading aide, librarian, Gifted teacher, and Assistant Principal at various points in her career. She maintained communication with some of her students even after her retirement and was proud that both of her children went into education.

After retiring, Carol dedicated much of her free time to the community of Hampton Park where she resided from 2006 until her passing. Upon hearing of her death, one of Carol's neighbors noted, "Hampton Park has lost a hero."
