Mary Lee Michel

Hernando - Mary Lee Michel passed peacefully in Hernando, FL surrounded by family and friends on 6/1/2021.

Born to Mary Bowen Ferguson and James Baker Ferguson Sr. in Baltimore, MD on 1/6/1928, Mary Lee grew up and spent many years living in the Baltimore area, including a brief stint with McCormick & Co.

Mary Lee was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and James Sr., her brother, James Jr., her daughter, Leigh Ann, her husband Howard Jr. (Mike), and her son, Howard III (Chip) and survived by her daughter, Diane (Patrick), her daughter-in-law, Cindy (Chip), and her grandson, Timothy.

Mary Lee married her devoted husband, Mike, in Baltimore, MD on October 20, 1950. She and Mike established their roots in the Towson area and started their family. After several years of retirement, Mike and Mary Lee ventured down to Naples, FL to enjoy the beautiful weather and year-round golf, re-establishing those roots and spending over 20 years in South Florida.

Some of Mary Lee's fondest memories were of times spent at "the shore" with her entire family in Ocean City, MD. She adored every moment she was able to spend with her family and friends, especially her many nieces and nephews, who she was known to treat as her own children.

Like an angel sent from the heavens, Mary Lee's first calling throughout life was to unconditionally serve others. She volunteered at various schools, churches and hospitals in the MD and FL areas for over 60 years.

Mary Lee always strived to have a smile on her face despite the many tragedies thrown her way. She lived by the creed: "Tomorrow will be a better day!"

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Johns Hopkins Cancer Center, P.O. Box 17046, Baltimore, MD 21297, Att: Leigh Ann Michel Memorial Fund.

I am so sorry to learn of Mary Lee’s death; and also of the death of her son, Chip. Diane, Cindy and Tim, my heart aches for you.

Mary Lee was a second mother to me; her daughter Leighann was my best friend (and always will be). Mary Lee’s generosity was beyond comparison. I always felt welcome in her home and in her life. Heaven knows I spent a lot of time there; grew up there, in fact.

Mary Lee’s smile is fresh in my mind. She gave it readily. It was beautiful, always present. That’s what I remember about her most, even with the loss she experienced in her life, I think of her smile. Mary Lee was kind, gentle, beautiful, funny, and smart; so much like Leighann in those respects. Mary Lee and I exchanged letters over the years. In them she expressed pride and appreciation for her family and for her circumstances. She was so attentive; she never forgot my birthday. Her handwriting was beautiful and her writing elegant, like she lived.

Mary Lee, thank you for all you gave me. And thank you for what you continue to give, because once you love and validate a person the way you did me, it multiplies. Diane, Cindy and Tim, a big hug to you.

Love, Jean Bichell Gould

When this tiny Scot entered the room, her contagious smile & shimmering bluish grey eyes caught everyone's attention! She truly enjoyed talking and laughing with friends and family. The Ocean City reunions were spent catching up on family, cheering the baseball games, eating crabs and celebrating. Aunt Mary Lee was my anchor and saw the goodness in life. Yes, we rode some wild storms together; but our ship never sunk. She had a way of calming the storms of life and using those times to strengthen others. I will forever cherish our lengthy phones calls and letters. Memories of the heart. Now my Earth Angel is with our other Angels watching over us with pride. Butterfly kisses!

Feel so very blessed to have had this wonderful Aunt in my life for over 60 years! Her Mom was so dear to me, when she passed it was a heartbreak just like losing our Dad her brother. The Michel family was there for us Ferg’s. I talked with her numerous times in last year, she hated being separated by family with Covid but she kept fighting with her positive spirit. You are with all those gone before you that you missed dearly, give them hugs for us and save some for yourself!❤
