Michael Allen Coxwell April 23, 1949 to July 21, 2013
Michael Allen Coxwell was born April 23, 1949 to the late Joseph Coxwell and his wife, Bonnie Lynell Aaron in Mobile, AL. He left behind his wife of 16 years, Marianne; four children, Michael Jr., Erik, Greg, and Madison; and six granddaughters, whom he loved and cherished. There was no opportunity he did not take to spoil any of those girls, which was clear by the way his face lit up in describing them.
After graduating high school in Santa Ana, CA, he received his Master's Degree in Horticulture from the University of Florida. From there he enjoyed a long, fruitful career.
Although he worked for many companies over his career, he treated each as his own. He would often take his work home, looking for a way to improve them. He went above and beyond to make sure that his fields exceeded his expectations.
Mike called this community, and the fields he managed for his company, home for 25 years. Mike was the gentle giant, he did not come across a person he didn't befriend, everyone who knew him loved him. This community was as close as family to him, and one he was proud to be a part of.
Many people say 'that man would give you the shirt off his back,' but if you ever met Mike, you would know that phrase does not do him justicehe'd give you his pants, too. He did so many things for so many people that they learned they could lean on him for support, and helping people brought him happiness. While he did not have much when he was raised, he never let his success get in the way of his wanting to aid anyone he met. Mike was the kind of man that if you needed something and he had it, it was yours. He was a philanthropist at heart.
Being a hard-worker, a family man, a contributor at work and the community, it would seem that he is a very serious man, but that was not the case. He was a master at poking fun at himself to raise a laugh. He sang karaoke, whether he was in a lounge, or not. Mike was a master of getting the crowd on a happy note.
However, planting was his life; he grew, not only to support his family, but because it was his passion. In his spare time he landscaped, traveled to photograph beautiful greenery, and doted on his 'little doggies'. No one had a thumb as green as Mike, and his absence will be sorely missed.
The Viewing and Funeral Service for Mike will both be held on Friday, July 26, 2013 at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga Street, in Santa Cruz. The viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Funeral Service for Mike will begin at 2:00 p.m.

I will always miss you Mike, I think of you often and forget that you are not with us anymore. I can not believe it has been a year, seems like only days. You and I had a special relationship, we could not see each other for six months and pick up where we left off in a minute. I often pick up the phone to call you and forget you are not with us anymore. A wonderful blessing I have is I get to share these feeling with so many others today and everyday. There is not any words that can describe what a kind, caring and loving person you were. I hope that when I grow up I could just be little more like you and If the world had more people like you it would be a far better place as your footprint on this planet will never be forgotten by those of us that remain behind you.
God Bless you and all those that love and miss you. You were simply the best of the best.

We will truly miss this giant of a man, husband, nephew, father, and friend to all who knew him. He left beautiful memories for all of us to cling to in the days ahead as there is a big void left by his living too short a life. I along with all of you the family will miss him, the many phone calls, and concerns, with love. A giant man of a nephew! As family and friends he would want us to stay connected just as he did! God bless each of you, in his love.

I am speaking for myself as well as all Mike's relatives that he grew up with that are no longer with us or could not be here.
I am starting with his grandmother Nettie who lived her whole life in Andalusia, Alabama, she had 5 children, 4 boys and one girl—Cass. Cass was the princess and all eyes were on her. Her only child was “Mickey” the apple of everyone's eyes. He grew up to be a hero. If it was scholastics, football or good looks and a big heart that was Mike.
His Dad, Joseph was from Greenville, Alabama, where “ Forest Gump” was from. He lived in his later years with his sister Ella Lee and Mike Jr. would go there for vacations in the summer. Mike thought boiled peanuts were the best and would go out of his way to get them.
He loved to play practical jokes on his Aunt Maxine and Cousin Judy. Billy Rae and Bobby Jean lived on a lake and we spent many great times together there When Mike was young he rode on the bus to school and they got all kinds of attention when Mike would call them out for kissing in the back.
Cass remarried Jay R from Texas and he was a bigger than life person he got run over in WWII and broke every bone in his body although he was the biggest jokester and recovered from that with only the pain. Jay and Cass both held Mike in their hearts and minds constantly. His mother suffered with cancer and fought it for over ten years. They loved their three grandchildren to pieces and were always the happiest when we were all together for great feasts at their home in southern California.
Mike's middle name was “Work” that brought him the most joy after his children. It seemed he knew every scientific name for plants and insects. He loved this area and all the people he worked with. He had many good years here with Maryann and Madison but the best was the last week of his life when all of his boys were with him here. He was truly blessed and so were we all with his humor, his generosity and intelligence.
He will be greatly missed.

Mike was a gracious and kind person who will be missed. I have fond memories of our group running into him in Butte County while visiting nursery operations and the fun lunch we all had at the only restaurant in town.
