Kathy my sincere condolences to you and the entire family. I remember the great laughs and escapades that Rich & I had over the years. After I retired and moved to Florida we lost contact, had no idea that he was suffering from ALS. After 23 yrs we moved back to NJ May GOD hold Rich In the palm of his hand and carry him over the threshold to heaven. R.I.P.

Dear Kathleen and all of the loving members of Richard's family, please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences. Richard was a SPECIAL man and Marine and he will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him! We shared two life experiences: 8th & I Marines and NJ State Police. From January 1965 to August 1968, Richard was assigned to the Ceremonial Guard Company at the Marine Barracks, 8th & I Streets, S.E., Washington, DC (the oldest active post in the Corps). This was, and is, a prestigious assignment. For more information about his 8th & I assignment, please visit www.8thandi.com. Rest in peace, Rich! Well done, Marine! God Bless Kathleen and the Avalone family! ..... John T. Reim, 8th & I Marine, Ceremonial Guard Company, Silent Drill Platoon / Rifle Inspector, 1958-1961 and Major, NJ State Police, 1962-1990, Franklinville, NJ "Semper Fidelis"

I got to know Richie when I was a reporter with The Star-Ledger in Newark and he was with the New Jersey Highway Patrol, which later merged into the State Police. One of his jobs was being in charge of the State Police contingent at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford. Richie was a top-notch law enforcement officer who approached his work with an unmatched sense of fairness, honesty and balance, and I always felt blessed having him as a friend. My deep condolences to the family and may he rest in peace. Guy Sterling
